Most traditional indigenous cultures have an awareness of the potential of certain sites on the earth to bring about health and in some cases sickness. These potentials were often articulated in myth and expressed through the concept of the spirit of place. Often places were regarded as sacred or beneficial according to the type of spirit or story it was associated with.

Present-day geomancy has many overlapping areas. Dowsers are not necessarily geomancers, though geomancers are invariably dowsers. For the most part, modern-day geomancy stems from euro-centric research such as Alfred Watkins' investigation into the straight tracks in England.
